Therapeutic Yoga Teacher Training Program

Not all Yoga Teacher Trainings are created equal. In fact, there is a huge disparity between the curricula of teacher trainings. If you are looking for a top-notch, comprehensive yoga teacher training program, you have come to the right place. Niyama is an industry leader for proper education and training.

What makes Niyama an industry leader in yoga teacher training?

Our therapeutic yoga teacher trainings incorporate the principles of yoga therapy and Ayurveda

Niyama Yoga Shala’s Yama Therapeutics Yoga Teacher Training programs have been in existence over twenty years, thus we have decades of experience training yoga teachers. Our programs were originally founded by Diane Finlayson and are now run by Nicole Zornitzer. Diane is the Department Chair of Yoga Therapy & Ayurveda at Maryland University of Integrative Health. Nicole is also a graduate of Maryland University of Integrative Health, from where she received her certification in Ayurvedic as a Certified Ayurvedic Lifestyle Consultant. They have infused their deep knowledge of Ayurveda, the sister science of yoga, into Niyama’s teacher training programs.

The Yamas and the Niyamas, which are cornerstones of Ayurveda, anchor the teachings of Hatha yoga taught in our trainings. The Yamas are restraints, or social disciplines. For example, one of the Yamas is Ahimsa, or non-violence. Embracing the concept of Ahimsa means our teacher training programs encourage you to respect your body’s edges and not harm yourself while practicing, nor harm your students by pushing them too far in their practices. The Niymamas are observances, or ethical conducts. One of the Niyamas is Svadhyaya, or self-study. Our trainings incorporate this concept and help you to understand and accept yourself.

They offer a top-notch anatomy curriculum

Niyama Yoga Shala partners with Amy Matthews and Leslie Kaminoff, world renowned yoga educators and best-selling authors of Yoga Anatomy. Matthews and Kaminoff lead the anatomy portion of the training. You will receive over 40 hours of anatomy training, in accordance with the Yoga Alliance’s requirements.

All students are assigned a mentor

Each teacher trainee receives a mentor that is a graduate of Niyama Yoga & Yama Therapeutics lineage, and/or is an instructor at Niyama Yoga Studio. Your mentor will guide you through the program, assist in your education and attend to any needs that may arise during the program. When you graduate, your mentor, Nicole and her team will guide and mentor you through your career and job search upon graduation.

In summary, completing Niyama Yoga Shala’s Yama Therapuetics teacher training programs are like earning an MBA in yoga training, whereas other training programs are like receiving an undergraduate degree.

How the trainings are structured

We believe it is vital that trainees spend sufficient time, and receive the proper education, to graduate and become successful professional yoga instructors. Thus, both our RYT 200 and RYT 300 yoga teacher training programs are nine months long. The teachings are conducted one weekend per month, from Friday evening through Sunday evening. Between each in-person training, students are required to complete homework that ranges from reading, to book reports, to internships, to in-depth study of yoga philosophy and history. All our programs are accessible to the working individual, as most of our graduates work full time while they complete the programs.

Post training support

We have created a community of yoga instructors who consider Niyama Yoga Shala their home base for resources and knowledge throughout the course of their careers. The Niyama Tribe expands with each graduating class. We pride ourselves in our lineage, traditions and respect for traditional yoga.
